Why Testing Air Quality in Ice Arenas is Important

January 8, 2015- Ice arena managers in Minnesota are highlighting the need to regularly test air quality after two incidents of suspected carbon monoxide poisonings occurred in Midwest ice arenas.

Dozens of hockey players and fans in North Dakota and Wisconsin became ill after spending time in two separate ice arenas recently. More than 81 people were hospitalized in the second incident in the Wisconsin Dells. Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts are the only three states that regularly monitor carbon monoxide levels in ice arenas.

In Minnesota, ice arenas are required to test air quality twice per week during the busiest times. If air quality is poor, the arenas must take corrective action immediately.
