New App Protects Workers from Heat-Related Illness

July 17, 2013- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released an App that helps workers take measures to stay safe in the heat by simply checking their mobile phones.

The OSHA Heat Safety Tool App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite. Based on the heat index, it displays a risk level to outdoor workers. Then, with a simple “click,” they can get reminders about measures that should be taken to protect against heat-related illness, based on the level of risk.

Reminders include: drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, and gradually building up the workload for new workers.

There’s also information on heat illness signs and symptoms, and how to monitor each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.
