How to Prepare For and Respond to Flooding

October 18, 2013- Floods are one of the most common hazards in the U.S. and can quickly turn into catastrophes. They’re caused by a sudden accumulation of rain, rising rivers, tidal surges, ice jams and dam failures.

Workers who respond to flooded areas face the greatest risks from floods, but all workers can help protect themselves by preparing evacuation plans and learning about the hazards associated with floods. Some tips from the OSHA’s preparedness page include: making an evacuation plan, emergency supply kits, and knowing the warning signs, as well as information on flood watches and warnings.

The OSHA’s response/recovery page offers details on hazards to avoid when flooding has already happened. This includes areas to avoid when using a vehicle, and safety and health hazards such as downed electrical lines, mold and wild animals.
