How to Deal with Mold When You’re Renting

September 15, 2014- In the Pacific Northwest and other damp places throughout the US, mold is a common problem, but it’s also preventable. Indoor moisture is the main culprit.

Mold often manifests with a “musty” odor. Visual clues include white threadlike growths or clusters of black specks along walls, typically in rooms where moisture occurs, such as bathrooms or basements.

Common places to find mold are in areas where there’s water damage or along walls where warm moist air condenses on cooler surfaces.

It helps if tenants observe policies related to proper ventilation outlined in their rental agreements, including the use of exhaust fans or windows in bathrooms and kitchens. Water-damaged items should also be dried or removed within 24 to 48 hours.

When mold does occur, tenants should always report the issue in writing to the rental owner.
