Flu Shot is the Best Form of Prevention

November 19, 2012 - Health officials are urging the public to get vaccinated against the flu, saying that it’s one of the best protections against the virus.

It also helps prevent the flu from spreading, said Heather Elton, director of Occupational Health Services at Columbus Community Hospital in Ohio. She told The Columbus Telegram that it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective. Flu cases reach their peak during the months of January through March, which means it’s important to get the flu shot as soon as you can.

The shot is recommended for almost anyone 6 months of age and older, unless a doctor says otherwise. It’s also recommended annually to protect against new strands of the virus. Last year, Occupational Health Services administered 6,000 flu shots.

The vaccine is inactive, so it can’t give you the flu, Elton told The Telegram. To avoid becoming ill, people also can practice good hygiene, limit contact with sick people, or stay home if they become ill themselves.
