Cleaner Jet Engines in Our Future

March 15, 2016 – It has been required for aircraft engine emissions to be measured and regulated since the 1980s.  However, measuring the emission of ultra-fine particles has presented more of a challenge.  Switzerland is presenting a new standard that should get final approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) within one year.

Although air traffic produces less than 1 percent of Switzerland’s fine particulate emissions, the microscopic particle’s health hazard of penetrating deep into the lungs still makes it a regulatory concern.  The new measuring system gives the mass of the particle matter as well as the number of particles emitted per liter of fuel.

Once the standard is approved, all engines of passenger aircraft will be required to meet this by January 1, 2020.
