Clean-up Efforts in Neighborhoods Contaminated by Exide Battery Plant

April 12, 2016 –  After the Exide battery plant closed in March 2015, a 1.75 mile radius of arsenic, benzene, and lead contamination was left behind.  County teams have started testing soils at 45-50 homes per day.  The county estimates that up to 10,000 homes could have experienced lead contamination, which can cause developmental delays and cognitive impairments.  The good news is that only 6 percent of homes evaluated so far have tested for the highest level of hazardous waste contamination.

The question of when cleanup will begin still remains.  Although the Governor has allocated funds they must still be approved through the state budget.
