Asbestos Found In Dirt in a Florida Neighborhood

February 13, 2015- Neighbors living near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airport expressed concern about toxic asbestos found in dirt at the airport, where an expansion project is underway.

Trucks recently began hauling away the asbestos-laden dirt that’s been held in a staging area just south of the airport. The removal process is scheduled to take about three weeks.

Melaleuca Gardens residents, who live just south of the airport, were outraged since several of them have backyards a few feet away from the dirt.

Airport spokesman Greg Meyer says the situation is contained. The asbestos was embedded in old floor tiles buried long ago on airport property.
