$1 Million of Unspent NATO Money to go CPS

January 16, 2013 - Almost nine months since the controversial NATO summit took place in Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that $1 Million of the unspent NATO money will be donated to the development of educational vegetable gardens at 60 Chicago Public Schools.

The money comes from unused federal and private funding raised by the NATO host committee. Kitchen Community, a non for profit, will be in charge of organizing and implementing the Learning Gardens program throughout CPS.

The vegetables that the children grow will be served in the school’s cafeteria. Individual CPS schools will be able to apply for a garden and Kitchen Community will evaluate the requests based on the schools capability and intent to integrate the garden into the school’s academic curriculum.
